Diablo Immortal Review: One of the Best Smartphone-First Action-RPG Games on the Market

When you load up Diablo Immortal for the first time, it’s hard not to be impressed by how good it looks. It’s clear that a lot of care and attention has gone into making this one of the best smartphone-first action-RPG games on the market. The character models are all well detailed, and the environments are suitably dark and foreboding.

What is Diablo Immortal and what are its features

Diablo Immortal is a mobile action-RPG game set in the Diablo universe. It was announced by Blizzard Entertainment in November 2018 and is currently in development by NetEase, who also developed Hearthstone and Diablo III for mobile. The game will be released on iOS and Android later on Wednesday and Windows PCs on Thursday. The game is a full-fledged action-RPG, with six classes (Barbarian, Crusader, Demon Hunter, Monk, Necromancer, Wizard) and features such as events, dungeons, and raids. Players can use their mainland and offhand weapons, armour, skills and abilities to defeat enemies. The game also uses a teleport system to move between locations.

The development of Diablo Immortal

The development of Diablo Immortal is being handled by a different team than the one that created the console and PC games. The switch to a mobile-first approach has been bumpy for some fans, but I came away from my time with the game impressed. It looks good, plays well and offers a ton of content for players to sink their teeth into.

How the game plays

One of my favorite aspects of Diablo Immortal is the way it borrows from other popular mobile games. For instance, there are several points in the game where you’ll have to make a choice that impacts how things play out. This is a mechanic borrowed from role-playing games like Square Enix’s Bravely Default, and it works well here, too. Another similarity to other mobile games is the way you can tap on enemies to unleash quick combos, and holding down your finger will activate a more powerful ability.

Our thoughts on the game after playing it

After spending some time with Diablo Immortal, we can say that it is a fun and well-made game. It may not be the most innovative title out there, but it is a solid addition to the franchise and a great option for those looking for an action-RPG on their smartphone. The production values are high and the game is clearly a labor of love from Blizzard. However, we do have some criticisms. The biggest one is that the game feels a bit too much like a mobile game and not enough like a full-fledged Diablo title. It lacks the depth and complexity that fans of the series have come to expect.
